Madison High is a wonderful school that deserves to win.

Madison is a small school in the WNC mountains - while funding is probably about average for a rural high school, it seems that teachers and administrators put what resources they do have to good use. There are numerous AP and honors courses, as well as a dual-enrollment program with A-BTech Com. College, in which upper-classmen are permitted to leave campus to attend college courses (for free!). Our child was able to graduate from Madison and begin at UNC Chapel Hill with 36 credit hours completed, permitting him to finish college in only 3 years. While our child did not take as much interest in vocational courses, I observed that Madison has a great number of these courses with excellent individuals teaching them. Members of my son's sports teams, who were not planning to attend college, were given the opportunity to learn valuable trades in electrical or automechanics.

The quality of the academic programs at MHS is much higher than the school is given credit for providing. AP and honors classes are available for students who are willing to apply themselves and have set higher scholastic goals. Extracurricular activities such as music, art, and sports are available, but a great deal of the financial support is provided by a small group of parents/volunteers who are willing to work on fundraising activities to generate monies for uniforms, etc. (Our last child graduated in 2004.)
